Shine & Impact! Learn character from Eric Liddell

Ninty nine years ago this week, Eric Liddell won his Olympic gold medal in 400 meters race and his legendary story inspired generations after him.

Eric’s story

Eric Liddell, a remarkable athlete and devout Christian, was born in China in 1902. His parents were Scottish missionaries, and he spent his early years in Tianjin. Eric’s passion for running became evident during his school days, and he quickly gained recognition for his exceptional speed.

In 1924, Eric participated in the Paris Olympics. Despite being favored to win the 100-meter race, he chose not to compete due to his religious beliefs. Instead, he focused on the 400-meter race, an event in which he had less experience. Against all odds, Eric won the gold medal and set a new world record, a feat celebrated around the world.

Eric’s faith played a central role in his life. He believed that his running was an act of worship to God. After the Olympics, he returned to China to fulfill his missionary work. He devoted himself to teaching and sharing the message of Christianity.

In 1941, as tensions rose during World War II, Eric faced a difficult decision. He chose to remain in China to continue his missionary work despite the growing danger. Eventually, he was captured by Japanese forces and interned in a prisoner-of-war camp.

Even in captivity, Eric’s unwavering faith shone through. He became a source of strength and encouragement for his fellow prisoners, organizing activities and providing spiritual support. He often quoted Bible verses to lift the spirits of those around him.

Tragically, Eric’s time in the camp took a toll on his health, and he passed away in 1945, just a few months before the camp was liberated. His legacy, however, lives on. Eric’s story inspired countless individuals worldwide, and it was immortalized in the 1981 film “Chariots of Fire,” which brought his remarkable journey to a broader audience.

Eric Liddell’s life is a testament to the power of faith, determination, and selflessness. His athletic achievements and unwavering commitment to his beliefs continue to inspire people to this day.
